What do I know about writing an eBook?

In short, I have already done it before without a single penny in my pocket and so can you. I am prepared to share my experience and the knowledge I gathered through my magnificent journey of finally publishing my own eBook Online. To be honest with you, the idea of writing and publishing my own eBook had never crossed my mind until a certain particular time when my life was literally turned upside down, and inside out. But that’s not the reason why you are here, you are here to learn how to write an eBook for free and sell it Online and I am here to help you do just that.

How and where do you start?

Learn How to write an eBook for free and sell it Online - Where to start

I have always liked to give this little but valuable piece of advice to many people, and you are obviously not an exception. Everything starts with YOU.

Allow me to reiterate more on this. You might not understand what I am about to share with you, but I promise that it will all make perfect sense if you simply apply it exactly as I have mentioned below. It’s much easier this way, besides; you wanted to know how to write an eBook for free and sell it Online right? This is the best free way of doing it.

What are YOU passionate about?

You might have already received many responses from others trying to give you advice on how to do this, telling you that you first need to come up with a topic before writing an eBook. I totally agree with them, but where does the topic come from? Do not look further than YOURSELF. This is the best way to start anything you want to do or achieve in your life, it doesn’t only apply to writing books. I promise that you can even use this method to start your very own business and make it a success. Write down your passion on a piece of paper, or simply start typing on your laptop this very instance. You’ll be surprised at how things tend to become more vivid as soon as you start putting one foot in front of the other. If you are only going to rely on thinking positive thoughts and talking to your friends about how you would love to write an eBook whilst doing NOTHING about it, you simply won’t get anywhere. Trust me, I know what I am talking about here, this is the same thing I do on a daily basis, the same thing I did before I started writing this post and now it’s published and you are reading it.

Your passion will automatically determine your audience and target market.

What length do you want your eBook to be?

If you truly understood the importance of writing about something you’re passionate about, then you should also understand why only you can decide on the length of your eBook. Really, I don’t know what you’re passionate about and I also have no clue what message you intend to convey in your eBook. What do I know about raising backyard chickens? Perhaps you do. 🙂

Start writing away now, going as far as only you will know is adequate enough.

Use Kindle Spy – Deciding on the Title of your eBook.

This is where Kindle spy comes into play. When you have a title in mind, make sure you research other titles already published on Amazon. Kindle Spy is here to help you with that.

Once again, this is your own choosing but my advice would be to choose a title that will stand out from the rest of competition. The title of my eBook is “Breaking the Maverick Code” which many people are still intrigued by. That’s the whole point and I know that it’ll serve its purpose. If your passion is raising backyard chickens, you might want to come up with a title which has a more “wow factor” than that!

“Chicks to Chickens – The ultimate Guide to Raising Backyard Chickens” by…How does that sound? Was it really that bad? I told you, I know nothing about this sort of stuff.

Write unique content. This should be easy since you’ll be writing about something that you are passionate and have more knowledge about. “Dr Charles” wrote about something he was passionate about and this shouldn’t be a difficult task for you either. Write using Microsoft Word, I’ll tell you why in a few minutes.

Including quotes from publications by others.

I personally received positive responses from everyone I contacted asking permission to quote some of their content within my eBook. If you want to quote someone in your eBook, simply contact them by phone or email and humbly ask them to send you a formal response acknowledging their consent. These are the places I personally received acknowledgments from:

The Secret – by Rhonda Byrne

The Science of Getting Rich – by Wallace Wattles

Think and Grow Rich – by Napoleon Hill

And much more…

Editing and proofreading – the free way

Ask a friend or family member to read your manuscript and give as much constructive criticism as they possibly can. Ask a good English teacher or professor you know to go through your book as a proofreading measure, at their own leisure time before you decide to publish it. Remember that I am only sharing the free method of writing and publishing your eBook.

Calm down, you will be a new kid on the block therefore; keeping the price of your eBook as competitive as possible should be something worth considering. I mean keep your price down to $2.00 if you have to, you’ll get a chance to raise it up once you see a considerable amount of sales coming in.

The Publishing Stage

Ranking Your eBook at Number One on Amazon by Choosing the Perfect Title!

There is a basic science involved in choosing the right title for your eBook. This is a secret known by people who always crush it on Amazon with every eBook they publish. Do you know a guy who goes by the name of Dr Charles Livingston? This is the same guy I mentioned earlier in this post, the guy behind the most popular weight loss product called “the fat loss factor” which once took the Internet world and weight loss niche by storm. All of his eBooks that he published on Amazon either rank number one or two on the first page of Amazon search results. He achieved the following results in the early days when he conducted an experiment on one of his eBooks about Detoxification:

In this Kindle Spy review, you will learn how Dr Charles Livingston was able to rank his Detoxification eBook at number one on Amazon using what I call “the Amazon Kindle Crusher”. This is one powerful software that will literally turn into your own personal money printing machine. Don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself.

Oh, I mentioned that I was going to reveal why you need to use Microsoft Word when writing your eBook and almost forgot. Read this post on how to format an eBook for Kindle for more details.

There are literally millions of ways to promote your eBook. Remember that promoting doesn’t have to be something you do Online, you can also do this through word-of-mouth and ask for reviews for your eBook from friends and families. As much as I advise you to use any method of promotion, the following method is what I regard as the best way to promote your eBook even if you don’t have a penny in your pocket.

        Hi Robert,

I think that would be the best thing you could ever do. If it was possible to put videos inside an eBook, I would do it too! All the best. 🙂

      Hi Robert,

You are more than welcome my friend. Can you believe that I am actually in the process of writing an eBook on affiliate marketing as we speak? I will have it ready before the end of today but I don’t plan on publishing this one on Amazon. I want to sell it on my blog. Check it out tomorrow. All the best to you too.

    Hi Peter,
Your website is a treasure trove of useful information. I have always wanted to write my own book but couldn’t find enough time. I didn’t know it is this easy to publish a book online. Thanks for the info. I have a few questions.
What kind of quotes should we get acknowledgment from when we want to include them in our ebook? Does this apply for personal blogs as well? Also, what do you think should be the optimal number of pages of the book to get good readership?
    Thank you,

    • Peter Mantu Post author

      Hi Vijay,

To answer your question about the quotes to include in your eBook, I can tell you now that you can include any quote, provided you have been granted permission to use in your eBook by the original author or responsible person. You might think that this difficult to do but I have been able to get permission to use quotes from some of the best authors we know. As for the optimal number of pages, this is entirely up to you. You are the only one who knows what kind of message you want to convey in your eBook. Also, you are the only one who knows if what you are sharing with the world within you eBook is sufficient to get the message through. My advise is to start, everything else will fall into place.

Thanks for you stopping by Vijay, I wish you all the best with your eBook. 🙂

    Hi Peter,
Nice post. I was thinking about the whole idea of e-book, and there you are.
Thank you for such a useful information, I will get back to it when I start working on ebook.

      Hi Zarina,

I am glad you found this post useful towards helping you write an eBook. All I can say is good luck with your eBook and thank you so much for visiting and leaving such a great comment. I wish you all the best. Oh, bookmarking this post wouldn’t be such a bad idea either. 😉

Quite informative. As an eBook author, I can tell you that you have hit the nail on the head with one exception. Editing. Friends and family can only get you so far, unless one of them is a professional editor. I would recommend getting anything you intend to publish edited professionally. It will cost, you but if you do it after the friends and family have picked it apart, their shouldn’t be much left for an editor to spend their time on. The way I look at it is, it’s my name on the book and I want it to be as good as it can be so that if I write another one, people will get it just because it’s written by me. If they read it and it’s full of bad writing, no one is going to want to buy another one of your books every again. Apart from that, great article!
    All the best

      Hi Peter,

Thanks for your comment. Great advise on the issue of recommending friends and family…although I only referred to them for proofreading purposes. I know exactly what you mean when it comes to editing. To be honest with you, I have read countless eBooks that haven’t been professionally edited and still sounded as good as they should. But I totally agree with you about making sure that your books are as good as they should be for future potential readers. I like what you said about remembering whose name is the eBook. 😉 Thanks again Peter, all the best to you!

I love that you can write and publish a book for free. Do you have tips on how to get it noticed once you go thru the steps you outline above? It seems like lot of the things I do don’t get noticed. I don’t think I am a great writer, but I also thing I am a little better than average yet, the response would indicate otherwise. lol

    • Peter Mantu Post author

I am assuming that you already have a blog right? That’s another place you can use to promote it. I also mentioned the importance of reviews from friends or family members, reviews rank eBooks higher!…If you need more help, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Wonderful post. Really appreciate the tips on getting an ebook happening. I have been thinking about doing one on transferring analogue photos to digital recently and your post is definitely a motivator. Just a question, I get that there are several outlets to publish to, but would you have any tips on how to ensure that my product could better standout in a sea of ebooks available on those publishing sites?

    • Peter Mantu Post author

Hi Stacey, thank you for stopping by and reaching out. 🙂 To answer your question about how to ensure that you stand out from the rest, I suggest that you visit Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing page an watch the introduction video there. I assume that you already have a blog. That on its own is a platform you can use to ask people to give honest reviews of your eBook once it’s published. If you opt for Amazon KDP, you will also have an opportunity to give out a few free copies. I would suggest you start with that for getting reviews. Reviews simply rank eBooks higher, it’s as simple as that.

I hope this helps, otherwise you can shout louder as I am always ready to help. Good luck with your eBook.
