Autumn of 1621 – The “first Thanksgiving” feast

The First Thanksgiving cph.3g04961
Autumn of 1621 is the season the English colonists famously known as Pilgrims celebrated their first successful harvest in the form of a “Thanksgiving feast” together with the Wampanoag.
After barely surviving harsh winter conditions, the Pilgrims built seven houses which were their common meeting places and also built three storehouses which were used for food and supply storage from their first harvest.
This happened ten months after their arrival at Plimoth which really meant having quite a lot to be thankful for given the harsh winter conditions they had to survive.Hunting was extremely common and making sure that you served meat on your table meant having to actually do the duck hunting and shooting yourself.

How was the feast prepared?

This was done by Pilgrim women and children where women were the main ones doing the roasting of ducks, whilst children mainly helped by grinding corn into samp.

The great leader of the Wampanoag, commonly known as “Sachem” with a title called Massasoit is the main reason why the Pilgrims were able to survive Plimoth. The Wampanoag’s favorite dish was deer meat and as a gift to the Pilgrims, “Sachem” Massasoit commanded several men to go deer hunting for the Pilgrims.

To be honest with you, I have conducted enough research to finally dispel the notion that turkey was amongst other foods served during the first Thanksgiving feast. As a matter of fact, most of the food we serve during Thanksgiving wasn’t even invented yet. 🙂

Duck was mainly served with squash, seafood, onions, cabbage, corn and venison. As we currently celebrate Thanksgiving Day by having friends and family around one big table, this was actually not the case with the Autumn of 1621 “first Thanksgiving feast”.

How was dinner served during the “first Thanksgiving feast”?

It wasn’t as formal as we currently serve our Thanksgiving dinner, it was more casual and even eaten for almost a week throughout the colony.

Nowadays, we prepare some really fancy meals with colorful desserts which were only invented in the latest yesteryear. We even include some of the most appetizing recipes we can easily get our hands on. Which reminds of a recipe book I always use to prepare almost every meal I serve called Paleo Grubs. It contains well over 470 recipes you may also use to prepare some of the most delicious meals including meals for the next coming Thanksgiving Day.

PS. What you just read is called a post but you probably know that already…

Where am I going with this you ask? I publish posts such as this one twice or thrice a week and make money from doing so. Really? Yes, it’s basically called blogging and I assume you’ve heard about it before. But here is an interesting part, whether you have heard of it before or not, you owe it to yourself to read this other SHORT post I recently published here:

For a long time, I have been wondering how turkey is associated to Thanksgiving, but couldn’t find any article pertaining to it. So…it was a duck initially, uh? That’s interesting 🙂 I think, like any other festivities, most of the food we have today are non-traditional as the original custom, but then again, the traditional serving might not be that mouth savoring. I guess that’s what you called by modern eating evolution.

Hi Cathy, thank you so much for stopping by and leaving such a great comment on Thanksgiving. To be honest with you, I would have liked to add more information on Thanksgiving but somehow got distracted when I had an idea of incorporating the slideshow presentation you see above. Otherwise I am happy with the post itself as I really think it served the purpose. Do you concur?
