What is Affiliate Marketing and How Does it Work?

Affiliate marketing is a type of marketing where an individual or company gets paid what is known as “affiliate commissions” for advertising or promoting OTHER people’s products.

Hi there and welcome to “Success with Peter Mantu”. I will attempt to explain what affiliate marketing is, how it works and how you can immediately start applying what you have learned from the information shared within this post, starting today. This is one of the shortest posts I have ever published, so rest assured that you will finish reading this within the next couple of minutes, reading at a slowest pace possible.

Who am I kidding? This post has over two thousand words and if you are serious about learning more on this subject, you must read it in its entirety. ๐Ÿ™‚ Forgive me for wanting to help by giving you as much information as I think you deserve. Others refer to affiliate marketing as:

How to Start With it Here

Before you begin to learn about affiliate marketing at its core, you need to understand its basis which strictly involves a relationship between four parties (The Advertiser,ย The Affiliate Network, The Publisher – also known as the Affiliate and The Customer or Product Consumer) which are explained in the following detailed process:ย

What is affiliate marketing and how does it work?

The Affiliate Marketing Process – How it Works and How to Start with it.

Read below to have a full understanding of how this whole affiliate marketing process works. Learn who is who in the zoo by following all the steps from step one to step five.

What is Affiliate Marketing and How Does it Work - The Entire Process Explained

  • The Advertiser – An Established Business or Company

This is a business or company selling services or products on their websites. These are also known as retailers or merchants. Some of these merchants include companies paying people a lot of money to test mobile apps and so forth. You would be surprised what advertisers do to get the word out about their products.

If you own any type of business and are more than willing to pay other people to assist you grow your business by helping you make more sales for your products or services; you are definitely an advertiser. What advertisers do in the affiliate marketing business is simply visit any affiliate network of their choice and place their products or services on the network’s website before publishers come into play.

  • The Affiliate Network

Examples of the most commonly known affiliate networks include Amazon.com, Clickbank.com,ย CJ Affiliate by Conversant (formerly Commission Junction) and many others which I have not mentioned in this post.

What is Affiliate Marketing and How Does it Work - The Network

Without an affiliate network, which is basically the heart of this whole process; affiliate marketing would not exist as this is the main hub connecting all other involved parties together. I have already given examples of affiliate networks above and you will understand why this is the heart of affiliate marketing in a few minutes. Some advertisers choose to have their own in-house affiliate program, while others choose an affiliate network to handle all of their affiliate network program.

This involves handling all the tracking technology used to facilitate the entire affiliate marketing process. The process includes the creation of affiliate links for publishers, tracking of sales and “conversions” made through publishers or affiliates’ referral links and the payment of “affiliate commissions” to publishers. Affiliate networks also handle all issues related to customer service and refund requests by customers or consumers. This would definitely take a lot of programming and a few computer geeks in the office to set up. If I was an advertiser or company looking to start an affiliate marketing program on any of my products, I would really consider letting these guys take care of all this for me.

  • The Publisher or the Affiliate

You are an affiliate or publisher if you are willing to promote the advertiser’s products or services in exchange for earning revenue or affiliate commissions. The first thing you need to do is know what type of products you want to promote and simply head over to an affiliate network of your choice and search for relevant products from different advertisers. Click on any of the affiliate network links above and get a glimpse of some of the products that advertisers have placed on different affiliate networks.

The Publisher or Affiliate

Advertisers or companies would normallyย  have a contractual agreement with the publisher or affiliate stating their consent to work with the affiliate in a partnership. This is then followed by “creatives” provided to the publisher by the advertiser (inside the affiliate network) which may include banners, links or even videos that can be used on the publisher’s medium of promotion. This can be a website or a blog. All these creatives have a uniquely coded “affiliate link” pointing the customer or consumer to the advertiser’s website before they take the final action of either clicking a link (where an affiliate gets paid per click), submitting their name and email address (an affiliate gets paid per lead) or purchase a product or service of their interest (affiliate gets paid per sale).

ย As illustrated in the image above, the publisher has an unlimited amount of options to use as a way of promoting the advertiser’s product or service to the customer. This can be done through sharing affiliate links on social media platforms such as Google Plus, Facebook, and Twitter.ย I know of a lot of people who have made hundreds of thousands of dollars Online by using the power of social media. The process of sharing can also be done through search engines like Bing, Yahoo and Google where customers or consumers will perform a search by typing what is called keywords for a product they are interested in. Other methods of sending traffic to your affiliate offers include using paid traffic sources.

To find out more about what the whole process of using keywords to search for products and services Online involves, you need to learn how you as an affiliate or publisher need to perform what is called keyword research to have your website positioned on the first page of major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing in order to be found by consumers or potential customers. You can also use Google or Facebook ads to promote to potential customers.

If you don’t have a company of your own, products or services to sell, this is who you would want to be. Also, as a beginner in the Online business; affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to make money Online.

I will show you how to make money as an affiliate for free towards the end of this post. All you need is a laptop or a computer with Internet connection. Keep reading to learn how.

  • The Customer or Consumer

ย This is an integral step which completes the whole affiliate marketing process. A customer or a consumer is anyone who will see the publisher or affiliate’s promotional ad, either by searching for it using search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing or when someone or the publisher shares the ad on social media platforms. This is also called website traffic which most marketers seem to be struggling with.

My favorite method of sending immediate, fast targeted website traffic is by paying for it at a cost of $0.002 per visitor. I am sure you would want the same thing if fast results are your main focus.

When the customer or consumer clicks the ad or the affiliate link, they will be redirected to the advertiser’s website where they will complete the action we normally call a conversion. The publisher or affiliate will be credited for a sale or conversion once the consumer’s action is complete. This whole process takes place inside the affiliate network since they are the ones doing all the tracking and allocation of credits and sales.

As stated in the contractual agreement between the advertiser and publisher, the affiliate network pays the publisher a commission for every sale or conversion made through their referral affiliate link.

How Affiliate Networks Pay Affiliates

Types of Conversions (Credits that publishers or affiliates are paid for)

Pay Per Click or PPC – this is self explanatory – affiliates get paid for all valid clicks generated through their referral link. It doesn’t matter whether the consumer made a purchase after clicking the affiliate link or not, you still get paid anyway. This should not be confused with “Pay Per Click” advertising and I won’t be going into this since these are two totally different concepts. Just stick to what I mentioned in the first sentence of this explanation.

Pay Per Sale or PPS – again, this is also self explanatory – make a qualified sale and get paid a percentage of the product cost. Most affiliate networks have advertisers willing to pay anything between 50% to 75% of the sale. Imagine making 300 sales on a $67.00 product that pays out 75% in affiliate commissions.

Let’s do the math here: 300 x 0.75 x $67.00 = $15,075.00 paid into your local bank account. If you don’t know what that looks and feels like, take a good look at the man in the picture above. ๐Ÿ™‚

Pay Per Lead or PPL – Affiliates get paid for a completed action where a consumer submits their name and email address on the advertiser’s website. This happens when advertisers want to promote to the same person on multiple occasions. You get them the lead, they simply pay you for it. As easy as this may sound, you’d be surprised how reluctant people are at giving out the name and email address Online.

I am pretty sure that we would all love to be the man in the picture above carrying a big bag full of money. I definitely would and this is why I am prepared to share my knowledge on how to turn any passion into a successful affiliate marketing business. As I mentioned earlier, I think by now you should know that all you need to do this is a laptop or a computer with Internet connection. Are you ready? Let’s do this… ๐Ÿ™‚

How to Turn Your Passion Into a Successful Affiliate Marketing Business – As an Affiliate

ย Without wasting anymore of your precious time, I am going to dive right into it.

How can you make money Online as an affiliate?

I have previously taught this method in many of the posts published in this blog but nevertheless, nothing stops me from doing it once more since you are already here. I promise to make it short this time around. This all boils down to knowing how to pick the best affiliate products to promote. Read below for more details.

Four Core Steps to Affiliate Online Success

  • Step One – Pick an interest or passion – write it down NOW

You might as well stop trying to make money Online if you don’t do this as I am asking you to. Everyone has something they are passionate about and everyone has something that interests them the most. You know what you are passionate about, but you just don’t know how you can turn it into a successful Online business. I’ll show you how to do this while having the most fun doing it. This is why it’s crucial to pick something you are most passionate about as this will ensure that you never get bored and start becoming less motivated along the way. You will have fun doing what you love and get paid whilst doing it. I have explained the importance of picking an interest in one of my posts titled “How to make money blogging“. You are more than welcome to read it if you need more help in this department. Otherwise, continue reading to learn more on how you can start making money as an affiliate below.

  • Step Two – Create a website or blog to market or promote products from different advertisers

Wait – this is the easiest part! I will show you where to create a website or blog in less than thirty seconds for free. Wow, I almost lost you there…stay with me please, I am here to help.

The first thing you would want to do is get a domain name for your website or blog. A domain name is simply an address for your website or blog just like any off-line business has a physical address. As you have probably noticed already, mine is “imwithpetermantu.com” and I have my own reasons for choosing it(I am with Peter Mantu). Depending on your interest or passion, choose something that you would want your potential customers to remember you by or simply brand yourself like I did.

When you are ready, head over to Hostgator.com, click on the “domains” tab at the top right of your screen and check the availability of your choice of domain name as shown in the image below.

Get Hostgator Domains Here

Once you feel comfortable with your domain name, simply register it, come back to this post and join Wealthy Affiliate University NOW!

  • The Simple Retiree

Your use of visuals is absolutely outstanding. When I read your site I want to trash mine. If anyone doesn’t understand what Affiliate Marketing is all about after reading this post then they’re just not working hard enough. Nowhere on the net will you read and see a better explanation than you have provided. Outstanding stuff, really really well done!

    • Peter Mantu Post author

      Hi Peter…”The Simple Retiree”,

Wow, I am really humbled by your comment and this can only motivate me to do more for others. You know, the main reason why I did this is because I have noticed just how people are both uninformed and misinformed about affiliate marketing. Some are clueless about it. Whilst many people are grinding hard to make it Online by joining Multi-Level-Marketing(MLM) companies that only last for a few months if not days, others are lucky enough to get some of the best information about making money Online. Affiliate marketing is only at its infant stage, at least that’s my opinion of it and if I can help others learn more about making money Online as affiliates; I will do it in the best way I can.

Thanks for your comment Peter, please do not trash your website…you are doing a great job too! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Peter, thanks for posting this information. For all of the guys out there that are new to online marketing this is going to be a really valuable article. In my experience most people that I know have never even heard of affiliate marketing, let alone tried it! But, less competition I guess!

    • Peter Mantu Post author

      Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your comment mate. I must say that your words are simply heartwarming. It really gives me great joy when I finally realize that what I share is something that people receive well and appreciate. I am in this for the long haul and I will continue sharing as much information with the wold as I can. If this post on affiliate marketing is really what you say it is, then I have accomplished one of many steps I am prepared to take towards helping others. Again, thanks for your comment and I wish you all the best.

  • Weston Brown

Hey, nice post on the overall general process of affiliate marketing! Most people are totally confused on what this even means. I myself have always been confused on the difference between an advertiser and a publisher. But it makes sense that the publisher is also known as an affiliate, who promotes the advertiser (whatever product they are selling) through an affiliate network. I can’t imagine how complicated it would be keeping track of stuff at an affiliate network. I know I would never be able to handle it, personally.

    • Peter Mantu Post author

      Hi Weston,

Thanks for your comment and I totally agree with you when it comes to the complications that come with handling things as an affiliate network. I think we are mostly comfortable being advertisers and affiliates. I am glad you found this informative and also hope it helped towards your affiliate marketing business. All the best to you Weston.

  • Kelen

Thanks Peter for the awesome information! So much useful information that I had never heard of! I love how you lay out a step by step guides to setting it up!

    Thanks again!

    • Peter Mantu Post author

Hi Kelen, thanks for paying this blog a visit and leaving such a great comment. I am really glad you found this information useful and hope you will use it towards helping you reach your goals and dreams. It’s really important to give step-by-step instructions when explaining yourself Online, this eliminates the possibilities of having to explain things over and over again. Affiliate marketing is an easy way to make money Online, but people need to fully understand it in order to make it a success. Thanks again for your comment and I wish you all the best with your endeavors.

  • Lynne

    Hi Peter
Thanks for a great article and for explaining what is affiliate marketing. For me it is something I misunderstood for a very long time, when I heard the term affiliate marketing I translated it into scam and spam in my mind!

    • Peter Mantu Post author

Hi Lynne, I guess it’s always the case with anyone looking to start making money Online. I have to agree that there are way too many scams going around Online and if you are only starting out, you are most likely bound to be scammed. I know I have been scammed before but somehow never gave up as I believed that there must a legitimate way of doing this. I found Wealthy Affiliate and this is where I intend on staying for as long as it takes. Thanks for your comment and I can only wish you the best things in life. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Lynne

Thanks Peter, I am finding out that the more I investigate affiliate marketing the more appealing it looks to me! What niche do you think is a good idea to start in? Do you have any info on choosing a niche?

        • Peter Mantu Post author

          Hi Lynne,

As I mentioned somewhere within this post under the sub-title: “How to turn your passion into a successful affiliate marketing business”, you will notice that I mentioned the importance of focusing on your passion. I see that called this a “niche” which is one of the main causes of confusion in this affiliate marketing business. When you start using Online marketing jargon mentioning words such as niche, people get easily frightened thinking that you are talking some foreign language.

          What is a niche?

You might have somehow missed this when I said one should pick something they are passionate about and this is all explained in a post I previously published on how to make money blogging.

There is nothing more to a niche than your passion and this is the best way of choosing one that will never bore you in the long run. I hope this makes sense. I would also like to thank you for your comment as you have raised an issue that many people were probably still not clear about in affiliate marketing.

  • Ian Hubbenet

I found this page to be very informative and I like the way you cover the steps to become an affiliate. Having been scammed several times in the past, I was so relieved to find WA after putting in keywords “how to make money online”

    • Peter Mantu Post author

      Hi Ian,

I am glad you found this page informative. I am really sorry to hear that you have been scammed several times Online. I guess there’s a lot more of us who have been on that boat than you could imagine. I have to agree with you about Wealthy Affiliate as I am also one of those people who felt relieved after finding this amazing platform. if anyone is looking for ways to make money Online as an affiliate, this is the place to start. Thank you for your comment and I wish you all the best with your endeavors.

  • Lynne

I’ve always wanted to know what is affiliate marketing, so thank you for sharing this great information. I’ve often wondered is affiliate marketing a scam or not.
I just have one question, can you start affiliate marketing without a website or do I need a website to be an affiliate marketer?
Thank you for explaining how to earn money through affiliate marketing, I found this very useful and interesting.

    • Peter Mantu Post author

      Hi Lynne,

Thank you for leaving your comment here about affiliate marketing. I also saw that you have a question about whether it’s possible to start affiliate marketing without a website or not. I assume you mean starting an affiliate marketing business as a publisher or affiliate. I am going to be honest with you on this one. If you want to make it a business (as an affiliate) that you have full control over, then Yes you should have your own website.

This doesn’t mean you cannot do this without a website. Check out this post on How to Make Money with ClickBank Without a Website to learn how. I have personally tested this and I know it works.

The most important benefit of having your own website is that you will have full control over affiliate links and products that you advertise while having an opportunity to showcase other skills you might have. There is nothing stopping you from doing this without a website or a blog, but this would mean that you will have to directly advertise your affiliate links to your potential customers which mostly involves paying to do so.

The method I proposed in this post offers people an opportunity to do this for free. That’s what I like about this method as it offers anyone an opportunity to start an Online business sharing whatever passion or interest they might have. Thanks again for your comment and I wish you all the best and hope I answered your question.

  • Saber

Hi Peter, thanks for your informative post about affiliate marketing! This is very helpful for those who wants to start their online business. Thanks for sharing!

    • Peter Mantu Post author

Hi Saber, thanks for your comment and I am glad you think this post will be helpful to anyone looking to start their own affiliate marketing business. I also hope this will help you with your business too. Nothing stops anyone from building their own affiliate marketing network or starting an affiliate program with one of their products. I know that most people will saturate this business as affiliates not realizing the potential in launching their own products instead. Where do you want to fit in? The choice is yours. I wish all the best… ๐Ÿ™‚

Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to make money Online…I don’t know how many times I have said this but if anyone is looking to start an Online business, especially someone without any Online experience or product to sell, this is the way to go. Many people don’t realize the potential that lies in this kind of business and Yes, this is a business. One thing I like about it is having control over it…nothing beats that! Thanks again for our comment, I wish you all the success you deserve.

Hi Peter, This is a very detail and informative post about the Affiliate marketing. I am new to affiliate marketing. There must be a lot of research to come out with such complete introduction on Affiliate marketing. I would say that I know the Affiliate marketing better now after reading this article. thanks.

  • Elliedan

Hey there Peter., nice approach. No matter how many articles I read on promoting WA or affiliate programs, they always read differently. This is good as I would thought by now that they would be so similar and same ol same ol. You seem to have done your research, this is great so we wont have to.

    • Peter Mantu Post author

Hi Elliedan, thanks for your comment. I appreciate you taking the time to read this article on affiliate marketing and how one can go about becoming an affiliate. You are quite right about having done some research on the topic, I just wanted to share this information in the best possible way I can. So far so good since I haven’t a single negative comment about it so…I am happy with what I have shared and I hope people will take this information serious and use it towards their affiliate marketing success. I wish you all the best and thanks again for your comment.

  • Drew

I never tried Click bank as an affiliate, maybe I’ll look into it.
i also find that I’m running into problems with tax laws and filling in more forms.
Apart from that I can vouch for Amazon as a reliable affiliate as well as bits of income from Google adsense.
I just find it hard to make conversions.
    Very informative article.

    • Peter Mantu Post author

Hi Drew, I would advise you to think carefully before you vouch for Amazon…don’t get me wrong though, there are people making six figures or more on Amazon as affiliates. But there are people making a lot much more with less effort as Clickbank affiliates. There are practically no hassles when it comes to signing up as a Clickbank affiliate and the commissions per sale can be very high…50% to 75% of the actual product cost while Amazon pays out 4% to 15%. This is entirely up to an affiliate though, if you prefer promoting Amazon products, go ahead. By the way, I don’t see why you cannot do both…it’s your blog and you can do whatever it is you want on it. This the beauty of having your own Online business that you have control over. Why are you struggling with conversions? Are you promoting products that are related to your website?

Thanks for your comment, I wish you all the best and hope you come back and let me know why you think you are struggling with conversions.

PS. Your website is global but not everyone can buy Amazon products from their different countries through your affiliate link.

  • Hannah

You’ve gone into so much detail here – I’m really impressed!

I actually thought I knew all I need to know about affiliate marketing but I was wrong! I learnt something new (well, a few things) from reading your article.

I am new to affiliate marketing but really can see how it can lead to such great success. My dad’s friend was earning an easy ยฃ7000 a month from his affiliate site. That was a good few years back too!

    Thanks for the interesting read.

    • Peter Mantu Post author

      Hi Hannah,

Thanks for your comment dear, I really appreciate it. We never seize learning do we? I am pretty sure that there’s probably a few things I missed in this post but I tried my best to explain what this affiliate marketing business is all about. As you might have noticed, I went a little bit deeper in explaining Publishers or the Affiliates’ main role in this business since most people want to become affiliates. I guess the main reason lies in wanting to earn extra income Online and affiliate marketing is definitely one of the best ways to start. Once again, I would like to thank you for your comment and wish you all the best with your business. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Alblue

    Hi Peter,

Thanks very much for the information about affilate marketing. It surprised me that affiliate marketing concept also include the PPC and PPL. Do you know any affiliate network with PPL program mainly other than maybe clickbank?

WA indeed is a very good place to learn about affiliate marketing and I would like to reccomend it to ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Peter Mantu Post author

Hey Alblue, I hope you are doing fantastic today! Thanks for stopping by my friend. Yes, affiliate marketing is all about bringing in customers regardless of whether they buy or not. It all depends on what type of affiliate program the advertiser has chosen. One Pay Per Lead program I know is Market Health…You can search for them and Google and you will find that most of their advertisers are using it. As far Wealthy Affiliate is concerned, I must say that you are right by recommending them since these guys really know what they are on about. Thanks again for your comment and all the best to you.

  • Maarten

    Hi there,

Wow this certainly is Affiliate Marketing 101. I haven’t seen it explained this well before and as an affiliate marketer myself I even understand it a bit better and will be able to explain it better to others later on. Your recommendation is definitely a worthy platform and a great place to start out. You talk about 50%-70% commission, I guess this is a bit different for consumer products? Or do you know of any of these going for these high commissions? Cheers!

    • Peter Mantu Post author

Hi there Maarten, I have to be honest and say that I couldn’t wait for your comment since I know you from Wealthy Affiliate University
Are you kidding me when you say that you have never seen a better explanation of Affiliate Marketing anywhere else? If this is really true, then I must say that I am honored. ๐Ÿ™‚ To answer your question about 50% to 75% commissions paid out to affiliates, Yes, this is true for consumer products as well. You are more than welcome to visit Clickbank.com and have your mind blown away to pieces you won’t even recognize yourself. I have mentioned ClickBank in this post above and also provided a link to their website. Thank you so much for your comment mate, I wish you all the best with your business.

Holy cow, you explained so much all in this one post. I think I will have to re-read it a few times to be able to soak in all the information. I, thank your excerpts on the relationships of affiliates in comparison to the buyer, the product and merchandisers. We do sit in the middle of all that and I think your article could be very helpful.

Hi Debra, I am glad you found this post helpful towards understanding the whole process of affiliate marketing. As much I think I have tried to explain the process in a manner that can be easily understood, you are quite right about reading it again to soak it all in as you say. Repetition is the key to mastering anything we want to learn and understand. You are also correct when you say that affiliate marketers sit in the middle of all this, but I also like the fact that every party depends on the existence of another in order for this whole wheel to turn. Thanks for your comment Debra, I wish you all the best.

  • Bert

    Hello Peter,

It is actually the first time that somebody explained how things work within an affiliate program.
And that is very cool. I did not know what PPS meant for example.
I also appreciate that you make a difference between a publisher and a blogger, that is also an important thing you said…

So, yes, definitely an interesting article!

Hi Bert, thank you so much for your comment. The first thing I do before I start typing away is put myself in your shoes. I would ask myself the same questions I would ask you if I was the one visiting your site and that to me is the most important thing in Online business. This affiliate marketing post is a perfect example of how I do it. You don’t want a person to feel like they needed to know more when you are the one who initially gave them an impression that you will show them how it’s done. I always advise other marketers to do the same and hope you have taken as much as you can from this post. Thanks again for your comment and I wish all the best that life has to offer. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Steph

Thank you Peter for this article. I learned a lot from reading it. I am looking into PPC (pay per click) and wanted to get additional information on it. You said it is self-explanatory, but there is so much to it. This is where the affiliate pays to be ranked within Google or Bing. Is that right? There is a right way and a wrong way do it. I would enjoy reading more about PPC and learning from your experience and your success with this. I hear it can be pretty expensive if you do not know what you are doing. Is that right?

    • Peter Mantu Post author

Hi Steph, let me start off by thanking you for visiting my website and leaving your comment. To answer your question about Pay Per Click, No; this is not what I meant. In fact, I have just updated my post to explain this further. The affiliate will get paid for ads clicked on their website before a customer is redirected to the advertiser’s website. Please do not confuse this with PPC advertising where “an advertiser pays Google to place his ads” on their search engine…they are two totally different things. In this case, the publisher or affiliate is the one getting paid per click generated from his ad(the one on his website or blog)

I hope this answer clarifies things. All the best to you Steph and thanks again for stopping by.
